The Monolith Celebrates 5 Years!

Five years ago today I launched Cinema Monolith, from the dining room table of my friend’s house in Lemon Grove, California. How will YOU celebrate?

Yes indeed, it’s been five long years since I pressed the oscillation button and launched this little movie blog, with a review of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, one of my favorite comedies of all time. And now, a mere 204 reviews later (what, just three a month?) I’m still at it, and still having a grand time with it all. I just wish I could pick up the pace a bit; I’ll never be able to churn out a post a day like I did during those two exhausting months early last year, but hopefully, if I really bear down from this point on, I can take a shot at maybe…four reviews a month!

And for those of you who enjoy my essays and articles, Top 5/3 lists, and an occasional look inside the CM vault, I’ll continue to post those features as well. In fact, I’ve got a Top 5 list coming up that’s way overdue, plus a Movie Ticket Memories write-up in the works, as well as a second Cinema Graveyard entry in the rough draft stage. I really get a kick out of writing these stories, so I hope to pick up the pace with those as well.

The only change I’ve made for the 5th Anniversary is one I’ve had in mind for a few years, and which I’ve saved for today: a new avatar, which you may have already seen on your way to this post. As I discovered five years ago, the same avatar photo was automatically attached to both of my blogs by WordPress (the other being my Statis Pro 1978 Replay baseball site), so I came up with an idea for a photo that would logically accommodate both. Hopefully the change won’t cause too much panic within the blogging universe.

And as a way of saying thanks to all of you who’ve visited the site over the years, and read my articles and reviews, and were kind enough to chat with me in the comment sections, the Monolith has once again partnered with participating Big Boy restaurants across the US and Canada to bring you a $2.00 discount on select menu items, valid today through February 1st. As always, some restrictions may apply.

  1. Congratulations Todd. Five years man! I’m just a “Todd”ler in comparison! (Sorry I’ll get my coat!) Great to see you making waves to get posting again. Yeah one a week sounds a great tiptoe back in and see how it goes from there. Looking forward to the top fives and other articles you come up with. Just booked my flight over for my Big Boy Combo meal. 2 dollars off, I love a discount. The double pic icon is great too mate.

Thanks, Wolfmaster! And you can’t be that much of a Toddler if I’ve only been at it five years…when did you start your blog? Wait, I just checked: December, 2016. Okay, I’ve got you beat by a year or two. And if you’re hungry, you’d better hurry up and get here…that Combo offer ends today!

      • Flight got cancelled due to snow! Turned back now as I’ve missed the Combo deadline! Was looking forward to that feast and $2 off. Hang on a minute £600 for the flight, taxi, time off work! DOH!

Hey, you were supposed to realize the cost discrepancy AFTER you arrived here! And of course, AFTER you’d paid for my Combo!

      • HAHA tbh I just got up and could do with that combo right now! I wonder if they do deliveries?

If they do deliver, it’ll cost ya! Or, just send half that delivery cost to me, your CM host, and I’ll rent a car, drive to San Diego, buy you a Big Boy Combo, and mail it to you. And a big hearty thank you, Mike! Glad we got to share a 5-year anniversary at about the same time…and hopefully at some point in the future we’ll be able to hit a Jaws screening together, at a 70mm giant-screen theater somewhere!

I will be celebrating with an elaborate four-tier “cake”… made of gourmet cheeses. Only the best to honor my cheese-athon co-host! Happy blogiversary. 🙂

Enjoy that cake, Lindsey…it sounds absolutely delicious! And I think it’s about time for another mini cheese-athon; I’ll send you a few ideas soon, and if you have something lined up that might work, let me know. And thanks for the well wishes!

2, 3 or 4 a month, it doesn’t matter as long as the reviews keep coming and also the interesting side stories. By the way, when did the big boy combo close in on 10 bucks? I can’t even recall my last visit. How many are still around these days?

Thanks, Mr Impaler! And remember, that Combo price you see is the discount price; I went to the Big Boy website and discovered their burger combos are $11.75! I also found out that the Frisch’s Big Boy I went to as a kid in Ohio used tartar sauce on their burgers…I’ll have to give that a try, because I loved ’em! Hope you arrived safely to the chilliest corner of our country…tell Mrs Impaler and Impaler Jr I said hi!

Thanks, Julie! I’d take you to one out here, but there aren’t any in Arizona, so it looks like I’ll have to come to Michigan, which has a ton…including one in Grand Rapids. You fly, I buy!

Hey Danny! I think it’s from 1992…that Big Boy has been celebrating my site’s 5th Anniversary for 27 years now.
