I know the official anniversary date was June 20th, but for me, Jaws will always be associated with July 4th. So grab a bucket of chum and celebrate!
So where were you 45 summers ago, when Jaws first hit theater screens? For me, it was the Fashion Valley 4 in San Diego, with my Dad, Mom, and brother (I guess it was ‘too intense’ for my younger sister to take part), and all these years later, I’m still having as much fun watching it as I did then. Today, it’ll be my third time watching it on Blu-ray, and perhaps my fortieth or so overall, and this time I’m going to put on headphones and try that DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track for the first time. Of course, it would’ve been cool to try out that new 4K release, but for that, I think I’m gonna need a bigger television.
And how will YOU be watching, and where? Or did you already watch it on June 20th? I’m sure there weren’t many theaters open for an anniversary screening, but if you were lucky enough to catch it on the big screen, I hope you had fun! There’s one theater I’ve always wanted to visit to see Jaws – the Giant Screen Theater at the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Peoria, Illinois – and since I won’t be able to make their July 10th show, I guess I should start planning now for a 50th anniversary trip!
So once again, Happy 45th everyone, and I hope you’re doing something Jaws-like today, whether it be watching the movie, reading The Jaws Log, or just relaxing on a beach chair in your back yard, enjoying a cool Narragansett while listening to the film’s soundtrack. I’ll be starting my movie in about an hour…with popcorn, and not a holiday roast.
The parents wouldn’t take us, but I got revenge (not really) by seeing Jaws 2 (ugh) when it came out. Good thing I eventually rented a VHS copy of the original a few years later. It’s a perfect film that still holds up, that’s for sure.

Well, at least you didn’t get the other revenge on your parents…Jaws the Revenge! But you did get to see Jaws eventually, which is good…and yes, watching it again earlier, I thought the same thing: it really holds well. Which I guess is why I’ve watched it so many times.

Why Peoria, IL? Sister city? You want to drive a bulldozer at the Caterpillar museum? By the way, “Hi Neighbor, have a Gansett!”, famous words by Curt Gowdy. Ballast Point for me tonight.

You mean, why is the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Peoria? I tried to find anything comparing Peoria, IL and Peoria, AZ, and came up empty…but I did find the sister city of Peoria, IL is Friedrichshafen, in Germany.
Never heard of Ballast Point, but I have heard of Curt Gowdy…does this ring any bells? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkbkhgZ95Ks

I was on Long Beach Island, NJ when I first saw Jaws. It scared the he’ll out of me. The next day, I was on a jet ski in the bay. I fell off at some point, stranding me about 10 feet away. I turned to expecting to see a giant fin coming at me. I never swam so fast to get myself back to that idling jet ski!

Hey Steve, pretty funny! I can’t believe you went out into that kind of scary water the very next day…I don’t think I went near a backyard pool for at least a decade!

Heading to Del Mar tomorrow. Are we safe?

I’m pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have in fact caught and killed a large predator, that supposedly injured some bathers. But as you can see, it’s a beautiful day, the beaches are opened, and people are having a wonderful time. Del Mar, as you know, means sea death.

Happy Jaws for Todd day bro. I’d of been a 3 year old shark pup. Toothless most probably. Nipping on small things, chasing anchovy shoals about. Slowly building myself up to take boat sized chunks out of things and getting ready for some Quint flesh. I’d give that Narragansett cocktail a go. Not sure how you could administer it to me. Some kind of long metal straw type devise. A pissed up shark could be funny to watch. The Peoria Riverfront Museum cinema looks intense and amazing. I’d need a special water chair. A hinged swinging water filled recliner of sorts.

Thanks, Wolfshark! I would say 3 would be much too young for someone to experience Jaws. But…maybe not? Just close your eyes at the scary parts, and that opening sexy part! And if you can make it out to Peoria (the Illinois one) in five years, I’ll meet you there and pay for your ticket to see Jaws on the GIANT screen!

I’ll start saving in the piggy bank right now Todd. See you in five years. I’ll be the one stinking like an old salty sea dog whilst crushing beer can’s.

It never gets old. I could watch this repeatedly and do but if I had my way I’d watch it with newbies cause the film still terrifies those who are seeing it for the first time. Cheers and enjoy.

I can’t remember the last time I watched this with someone who’d never seen it before…but my Dad and I got such a kick back in ’75, after one screening had ended and we stuck around for the second screening (back when moviegoers were allowed to do this), and we specifically watched the reactions of audience members during ‘shock’ moments. Seeing an entire damn theater jump eight feet out of their seats when Hooper met Ben Gardner’s head was priceless.

My son is home for the summer, and guess what, he has never seen
it! I know what we will be watching this weekend.

Hey Reid, cool! So did you end up watching, and if so, did he enjoy it?

I’m getting old! I was five years old when my parents took me to see it in the theaters. It was an experience I’ve never been able to forget. And it’s a brilliant movie that has stood the test of time.

You’re the second person to comment on this post who was just FIVE when they first saw Jaws! My brother was eight when he saw it with us, and he had his hands in front of his eyes the entire time…I can’t imagine how a five-year-old could handle it! But kudos to you for surviving the ordeal…and yes indeed, a brilliant movie.

I have heard some say it was the scariest movie of all time, but I would say it rates second behind Alien. Great post.

I would agree, Alien is a scarier movie…but Jaws is more fun! Thanks for the visit, Geri!
